In a decisive 68\u201330 vote, the Senate approved the GENIUS Act<\/strong> (short for Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins<\/em>), a bill that aims to establish a clear federal framework for the issuance and regulation of payment stablecoins. If passed into law, the GENIUS Act could mark a turning point in how digital dollars are used, issued, and trusted\u2014not just in the U.S., but around the world.<\/p>\n

\ud83e\udde0 What\u2019s in the GENIUS Act?<\/h3>\n

The bill would require all payment stablecoins to be:<\/p>\n

    Fully backed<\/strong> by U.S. dollars or highly liquid assets.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Audited annually<\/strong>, with stricter requirements for issuers with over $50 billion in circulation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Issued only by approved entities<\/strong>, excluding large tech firms like Meta and Amazon unless they meet strict financial and consumer privacy standards.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    It also includes important protections for users. In the event of bankruptcy, stablecoin holders would get \u201csuper-priority status,\u201d<\/strong> meaning they\u2019d be first in line to get their money back\u2014a strong signal that lawmakers are taking consumer protection seriously.<\/p>\n

    The bill doesn\u2019t stop at the U.S. border, either. It introduces oversight on foreign-issued stablecoins<\/strong> and includes anti-money laundering provisions aimed at preventing abuse of the system.<\/p>\n

    \ud83c\udfdb\ufe0f Politics Meets Crypto<\/h3>\n

    The GENIUS Act has been a top priority for the Trump administration<\/strong>, which has taken a notably pro-crypto stance since returning to the White House. Trump has publicly backed the bill and wants a stablecoin law signed by August<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
